Although the Tigers lost the match, Tyler’s strong pitches stood out. Notably, the team had their fifth consecutive season under 500 after the loss to Minnesota Twins. However, their 82nd loss would be remembered for Alexander’s flying saucer cum ball.
Alexander’s strategy
On Tuesday night, while Alexander was drawing his pitch, Twins’ Willians Astudillo called a late timeout. However, the Detroit star did not plan on retrieving the pitch. Usually, in these cases, Tyler throws the ball at the backstop, but this time he sailed it through into the stands.
In baseball, once a pitcher starts the delivery, it is advised to complete the pitch, saving the player from the risk of injury. Although, Tyler did not complete his pitch the way it’s usually done.

Tyler, later on, revealed that he has been practicing this for a while. According to Alexander, it’s his strategy to not give the hitter a free look at the pitch, and that’s why he throws it up in the air.
Tyler recalled, “I had a teammate in college, Preston Morrison, and I thought it was hilarious when he would do it. And he told me one day that it served a purpose, kind of like a free change of eye level.”
