As star pitcher, Steven Matz joined the St. Louis Cardinals, his former owner was not happy about it at all and went on to attack Steven’s agent on Twitter. However, Steven’s agent also did not sit silently as Mets’ owner accused him of betrayal.

Steven Matz’s agent replies to New York Mets’ owner Steven Cohen

Recently, Steven Matz signed a $44 million deal with the St. Louis Cardinals for four years. However, like the New York Mets fans, who were hoping to have him back on the team, the owner, Steve Cohen, wished for the same as well.

After hearing about his deal with the Cardinals, Cohen felt betrayed by Matz’s agent, Rob Martin, and took his disappointment to Twitter. Cohen tweeted, “I’m not happy this morning. I’ve never seen such unprofessional behavior exhibited by a player’s agent. I guess words and promises don’t matter.”

In response to the controversial tweet, Rob (Matz’s agent) also issued a statement. Rob said, “We are aware of Mr. Cohen’s tweet. It’s unfortunate that he chose to take his frustrations to Twitter. I will not do the same, and instead, take the high road which is consistent with both my character and the character of our client.”

Rob justifies Steven Matz’s decision

30-year-old Steven Matz has spent most of his MLB career with the New York Mets (2005-2020). However, in 2021, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. As Matz entered free agency now, Mets were expecting him to come back home, but he chose a different path instead.

Matz’s agent also justified why he choose the Cardinals and explained that he still has a lot of love for New York City. He said, “Steven Matz grew up a Mets fan, loved his time there, and continues to invest in the New York Community through his efforts supporting NY’s First Responders. As a result of all that, there was a strong pull to return to the Mets.”

He further added, “But ultimately he made the decision he felt was best for him and his family. Steven is and always will be grateful to the Mets and Mets fans, but he now looks forward to his next chapter with the tremendous franchise in St. Louis.”

While the news is indeed heartbreaking for every Mets fan, the decision about his future is only Steven’s to make. However, if a commitment of any sort was made earlier, one would expect both parties to abide by it. What are your thoughts about the same?
