The highest-paid New York Yankees’ athlete Gerrit Cole shocked everyone when his pitching failed in the Wild Card match against rivals, Boston Red Sox. Cole’s agent has opened up about what might have been the reason for the surprising downfall in his performance.

Although, it was not just Cole’s performance that cost the Yankees their World Series dreams, but the whole team’s performance. Yankees ace Cole was facing hamstring issues in September, according to his agent.

Gerrit Cole’s agent reveals injury issues

Entering the Wild Card game against their long-time rivals, Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees had a lot at stake. The spotlight was undeniably on their starting pitcher and ace card, Gerrit Cole. Unexpectedly, things went south, as Aaron Boone was seen calling Gerrit Cole back from the mound.

The Red Sox eventually triumphed over the Yankees, clinching their post-season berth by a 6-2 victory.

Gerrit Cole’s agent, Scott Boras, revealed during the 2021 MLB GM Meetings that a left hamstring had impacted his performance. He said, “Once he popped that hamstring a bit it really, obviously…you just look at his numbers. It impacted him and he did his best to fight through it.”

Yankees had signed a whooping millions contract with Cole in 2019 end with a dream of marking their place in the postseason. Sadly, that couldn’t happen for the Yankees this season. Although, Cole’s attempt to play through the pain and stay on the mound for Yankees was commendable.

One cannot deny Cole’s abilities that make him one of the best pitchers in baseball. In his outing for the Yankees, Cole had pitched at 3.23 ERA in 181 1/3 innings and had 243 strikeouts.

Remarkably, Cole has made it to the Cy Young Award finalist list for the 2021 season, and it is his second time being the finalist.

New York Yankees’ contract worth millions with Cole

In 2019 end, Cole had signed a $324 million contract with the Yankees for nine years. Cole still has a lot of time left with the Yankees to prove himself worthy of being one of the highest-paid baseball players in history.
