Trevor Story could be a short investment for Chicago Cubs

The MLB lockout has paused all the conversations between teams and players in free agency. Hence, the Cubs will have to wait till it’s over to convince their priority free agents. However, a new report had revealed, the Cubs are not interested in committing a long-term deal worth millions with Carlos Correa. The 27-year-old is seeking a $300 million-plus, long-term offer.

Hence, the Cubs might not land upon a deal with Correa, although they still need a shortstop. That’s when Trevor Story comes into the picture. The controversies around free agency have aligned the narratives of the two top shortstops. Notably, Cubs can sign Trevor Story for a short-term deal, for a budget less than for Carlos.

While 27-year-old Carlos has better numbers than Trevor, the latter is just right behind him. The former Colorado Rockies, star, has been All-Star two times and has clinched two Silver Slugger awards. Remarkably, he has a BWAR of 26.7, whereas Correa has 34.1.

Well, it’s not over for Cubs and Carlos Correa. The two have shown mutual interest in each other. While they cannot offer his expected long-term deal, they still can lure him through a short-term deal with a higher average annual salary.

However, it will be clear once the lockout is over, and the craziness of MLB economics unfolds. Teams are going to be aggressive in their pursuit of top players, especially Correa. So, Cubs will have to keep their doors open for both Carlos and Trevor in order to meet their shortstop needs for the 2022 season.
