

Baseball legend and the former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz aka Big Papi was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot. While San Francisco Giants legend Barry Bonds and another former Red Sox star Roger Clemens missed their name on the Hall of Fame. Both missed their name in their last year of eligibility on the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballot.
Earlier in 2021, no former players received the honor of Baseball Hall of Fame from the BBAA. Notably, not a single candidate had received the minimum required number of votes needed for the induction from the members of BBAA. As per rules, candidates must get at least 75 percent of votes from the BBWAA ballots to make it to the Hall of Fame.

This time, Red Sox legend David Ortiz was the only former player to hear his name from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBAA) ballot. After hearing his result from one of the BBAA members, overjoyed Ortiz jumped from his seat and got emotional with his friends and family. He was with his Hall of fame teammate Pedro Martinez by his side during the announcement.

Red Sox’s Big Papi got his name on the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Ortiz received 307 votes out of 397 (77.9 percent), approx 3 percent more than the required 75 percent. When a member from the BBAA announced the result, the Red Sox legend was pumped up to hear his name.

This achievement for Ortiz is an immense honor for him as well as the Red Sox team. Notably, he was one of the most formidable hitters of the game during his time in Boston. The Red Sox legend’s career overflowed with his postseason performances and was one of the most beloved players of his team.
