When Usain Bolt won three consecutive gold medals, the world took notice. He is the fastest man alive, and no athlete has come close to beating his record to date. The 100-meters competition is one of the most highly anticipated races on earth. Hence, for him to dominate that for three years speaks volumes about his commitment. Moreover, he did all that while suffering from scoliosis.

The world champion recently shared a photo of his spine condition on Twitter. The phenomenon of scoliosis can dampen an athlete’s chance of having an illustrious career. However, so was not the case with Bolt.
Usain Bolt on scoliosis
The medical condition called scoliosis is the sideways curvature of the spine, which is prevalent amongst adolescents. Most of the diagnosis is mild, but some can lead to the curvature being grown to a long S curve. Although there are no treatments for young children apart from wearing a brace, surgeries are a part of the treatment process to figure out the problem. Revealing the photo now, Bolt talked about not giving up on his dreams, even though he had this problem.
“When I was younger it wasn?t really a problem. But you grow and it gets worse. My spine?s really curved bad [makes ?S? shape with finger]. But if I keep my core and back strong, the scoliosis doesn?t really bother me. So I don?t have to worry about it as long as I work hard. The early part of my career, when we didn?t really know much about it, it really hampered me because I got injured every year,” said Bolt.

Bolt dominated the Olympics
Not limited by his condition, Bolt produced some of the best performances at the Olympic Games. Earlier, Carl Lewis won four consecutive gold medals for the long jump competition. However, he won three gold medals for two events in three years. An outrageous feat, the sheer determination required to pull that off is extraordinary.
Despite his medical condition, Bolt worked hard to achieve the unthinkable on several occasions. He is the current 100 and 200-meter world record holder, who still enjoys the title of the world’s fastest man alive, despite retiring from the track years ago.
