For the 58th time, the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup is back to keep the fans on their toes. With the GOAT Mikaela Shiffrin standing atop her 7th Levi slalom title, the men aren’t far behind. After back-to-back event cancellations, Manuel Feller finally clinched the first slalom in Gurgl. However, the game in its totality is a little shaky this year.
Three of men’s alpine skiing events stood canceled for harsh weather conditions. On November 18, the men skiers could race for the first time at this World Cup. But somehow, they’ve transferred the misfortune to the women. Though the first three days had clear skies and pleasant weather conditions, it doesn’t look like it anymore.

The Audi FIS Ski World Cup took to its Instagram handle to post the uncalled-for news. The caption read, “Due to strong wind gusts the jury together with the LOC decided to cancel today?s downhill.” All the women skiers who were girding up to defend titles or make individual marks, the news came as a shock.
However, the 2-time Olympic gold medalist, who was on her winning spree, has kept herself off the downhill event this year. Speaking of the event in Zermatt, it’s the only cross-border race, which starts in Switzerland and ends in Italy. As exhilarating as it sounds, the men also failed to hit the Zermatt slopes two weeks ago.
The constant rise in Global Warming has changed snow consistencies following the slopes already going bare. In some years, the skiers may have ‘no-snow’ moments, which may lead to a significant alpine skiing downfall. But in Zermatt, strong winds are posing more threat to the skiers as it did in 2022 as well. According to the current weather status, Zermatt is standing at 6 degrees and there are chances of rain on snow, which is a complete no in this sport.
Having said so, the woman the world rooted for was Sofia Goggoi, who was stepping foot to claim her downhill title for the consecutive 4th time. But her dreams look far-fetched now. Unable to control their frustrations, fans hop in with their worries and wishes to get some changes implemented.
Ski fans left frustrated
Attacking FIS directly and proving himself as a true Ski enthusiast, one fan said, “how many races have been cancelled so far this season?” Even in 2022, a similar Zermatt instance had worried fans. Talking about history repeating itself, one fan said, “This happened also last year at the same location. Can you reschedule it at different month? This is a complete waste of money!! November is too early.. why keep on insisting..”

Speaking in the same vein, another fan said, “Talk about wasting the athlete?s and federations? time and money, as most predicted?” Throwing some insightful light, one fan said, “Running a race at this altitude is far too risky and too dependent on the vagaries of the climate.” Whereas, on the other hand, another said, “Embarrassing for the organisers and FIS.”

Since the perfect temperature of alpine skiing ranges from -8 to 3 degrees, the present Cervinia temperature in mid-November can be difficult. In a world where carbon emissions, hurricanes, wildfires and extreme heat have melted most of the glaciers, the alpine ski world is on the verge of fading away.
