Mikaela Shiffrin, the queen of snow, has just surpassed the alpine skiing great Ingemar Stenmark and earned her 88th World Cup win. The 5-time all-around World Cup gold medalist stepped foot on the 2023 World Cup season. On a mission to make a century with her 100th career win, the 28-year-old geared up to ski. But her fate didn’t favor her on the first day.
On the 370-metre Rettenbach slope, as her level-pegging competitors skied, the Olympian waited for a turn of tables. However, with not much hope, she finished sixth, while the Olympic super-G gold champ clocked 2min 18.94sec. This hard Shiffrin hard, as the alpine skiing great was the youngest alpine skiing champion at just 18. But, keeping aside her slope-related woes, she missed out on a spooky day, too.

Mikaela Shiffrin prioritizes the World Cup
As the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup 2023/24 women’s roster was announced, Shiffrin stood atop. After she received her 87th World Cup win on 2023 March, she failed to register her success. When the truth of her being the GOAT set the internet ablaze, she said, “I don’t know if it’s sunk in yet.”
Fast forward to now, that same woman skipped Halloween to make the biggest history. In a recent Threads post, she used emojis to caption her snow-covered slope picture. The Run 1 and Run 2 of Giant Slalom, held in Solden, Austria was the first women’s event. The next stop was Levi, Finland, where Shiffrin hinted at her next big comeback.

On special days, the 28-year-old either spends time with her family or her boyfriend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. The Norwegian pro alpine ski racer had been a powerful figure in her life. She once said, “He is for me. He’s such a role model as an athlete”. Despite not being able to celebrate America’s spookiest season, the two-time Olympic gold medalist held her ground strong.
Though her sixth finish looked disheartening to her fans, she was not unhappy. Considering every failure as a stepping stone, Mikaela Shiffrin opened up in an interview.
Shiffrin’s high-spirited mindset
After the race, she said, “I don’t feel bad today. It’s a beautiful day, and the race was exciting.” She lauded her top-tier competitors while saying, “…watching the top women ski today was great.” According to the initial race, she trailed behind the topper but going forward, she couldn’t beat Behrami.

In fact, even Brignone and Vlhova surpassed her. But one of her honest confessions left the world in shock.
She said, “The first (giant slalom) race of the season last year was Killington, and I was 13th. This year, I am sixth. It’s an improvement from the start last year.” Since she made a record 21 with the most GS wins ever in the last season, her chance of redemption remains open. With 14 wins in 2022, she became the ‘winningest’ alpine skier.

Though she surpassed Behrami with a total of 989 points, this year looks difficult to her. All those she considered surpassable came back bigger and better. Now, it’s just a matter of 10 more days, as the women’s slalom takes place on November 11th.
