Mikaela Shiffrin experienced the most painful time of her life in 2020 after her father, Jeff Shiffrin’s sudden passing. The alpine skier found herself negotiating the depths of sorrow comparing it to “healing from an injury.” Just one month later she went on the “therapeutic” journey of healing in the mountains while participating in the World Cup Alpine Skiing circuit. In the following years, Mikaela Shiffrin made history by being the most decorated alpine skier, currently boasting 95 WC medals.

Currently recovering from a leg injury from a downhill competition in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Shiffrin shared a special memory at the heartbreaking anniversary of her father’s passing with her followers leaving an emotional wave behind.

Although Mikaela Shiffrin is idolized by many, she has always looked up to her father. Her dad first took Mikaela to the snow-capped mountains and instilled in her a passion for sports and was frequently seen holding a camera to capture his daughter sliding down the hills. It’s been four years since Jeff passed away and remembering her hero today, Mikaela shared two pictures of herself with her dad with a white heart emoji.

For those who don’t know, Jeff was an anesthesiologist with Vail Health and Anesthesia Partners of Colorado. At the time of the accident where he had a sever head injury, he was at their new home in Edwards, Colorado while Mikaela and her mother, Eileen Shiffrin, during a Sports Illustrated photoshoot in Europe. They flew back home to be by Jeff’s side in his last moments along with the close family members.

Mikaela was most impacted after the incident since she was the closest to him. She has been outspoken about her struggles to deal with his loss over the years, claiming that there were moments when she “couldn’t even get out of bed” and that her father’s death caused her to “contemplate quitting” skiing. If it hasn’t been said before, Mikaela is without a doubt one of the most compassionate skiers with fans who support her like family and were quick to comfort her after the update.

Sharing akin emotions, one wrote, “Tears in my eyes,” another one noted Jeff’s everlasting presence and said, “Four years already…unforgotten!” Many showered her with love saying, “can’t believe it’s been 4 years already. Keep being strong!”; “Great tenderness and beautiful photos with your dad”

Some even shared how they overcame the loss of their loved ones with one noting, “What helped me is focusing on remembering all the special times. Talking about the person and what they meant makes them live on in a way. It helped me.” After winning her 47th slalom in 2022, Mikaela Shiffrin showed that she knew how to get back up and go. “Dad, I hope you had a good view,” she remarked, as if her dad had never left her.
