It is another day in the 2023-24 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup and another day of thrill for the Alpine Skiing community to embrace. 3 months into the tour, the season has witnessed the good and the bad, excitement, and disappointments, all in equal amounts. Today as the 9th leg of the competition takes precedence, the pattern continues. Even more so for the industry’s icon, Mikaela Shiffrin who races for a milestone.
Mikaela Shiffrin has trodden through the alpine skiing industry for the past 12 years to stand as ‘one of the greatest alpine skiers of all time’. The prestige has reached the 2-time Olympic gold medalist as she adorns the most World Cup titles yet. For Shiffrin, with continued momentum and determination, a milestone is all but far.
Mikaela Shiffrin inches closer to milestone

On the 28th of December, the Schlossberg slope of Lienz hosted day 1 of the next phase of the 2023/24 Alpine Skiing World Cup. With 1:01.82, Shiffrin claimed the 1st round victory ultimately catapulting her towards a comfortable position. The slope of Schlossberg was Shiffrin’s to dominate as she raced 0.63 seconds faster than the runner-up, Hector Sara in round 1.
However, round 2 was rather competitive for Shiffrin who was challenged by Federica Brignone of Italy. Ultimately, the 3-time Olympic medalist clocked the time at 2:05.98, 0.38 seconds clear of Brignone. The race marked Shiffrin’s first Giant Slalom win for the season, adding to 2 Slalom and 1 Downhill. The tally of which shot up to 92, pushing Mikaela Shiffrin towards a nearing milestone of 100 titles and hopefully the 6th World Cup title.

The skiing icon reigns healthy spirit
Winning events hasn’t been a new process for Mikaela Shiffrin with hundreds of accolades. Nonetheless, despite the unprecedented numbers she owns, Shiffrin hasn’t let go of the excitement that skiing carries for her. “Yeah, that’s exciting! It’s nice to do it,” Shiffrin exclaimed; states Olympic.com.

“Federica – three more gates and she probably would’ve taken it!” Mikaela added. What entailed further was her aim to learn from the round 2 mistakes and observe the takeaways for further races. The 5-time champion currently leads the women’s world standings with 800 points and hopes to maintain the position. According to Mikaela, the feat would mean ‘the biggest accomplishment’ in her athletic career.
