Mikaela Shiffrin was on her 100th career win run and she has achieved it. Though she’s rooting for her 92nd World Cup victory now, the Audi FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup 2023/24 has already seen the best of the GOAT this season. But behind her stellar wins, a village is at work, and she never skips to mention that.
Recently, the 28-year-old skier has secured her 91st win in the Downhill discipline at St. Moritz. Peaking into her trophy purse, she currently stands with 55 slalom, 21 giant slalom, 5 Super-G and 4 downhill wins. As more lay ahead until she exits skiing, the 28-year-old pays tribute to the real specialists.

Resorting to her TikTok, the 28-year-old posted a compilation of her fierce skiing moves. But the caption caught the most attention. It read, “As ski racers, our ski technicians/servicemen play such a key role on our teams. Like I said last weekend…without Lukas’ incredible work on my @atomicski redsters in St. Moritz, the results wouldn’t have been possible.”
Hunching over workbenches, fixing every inconvenience which comes along, the servicemen are the real heroes behind every performance. And because of their hard work, that the skiers can be that fast. Since alpine skiing is a sport which can be at the mouth of more adversities, weather fluctuations besides knee-deep snow activities, the venues need special cautionary measures.
Working often in hotel cellars, the servicemen or ski technicians are not much popular among ski fans. Tuning athletes’ skis, servicing, repairing, waxing the edges and filing the bases are some of the tasks they do, among others. Moreover, they even stand in chilling cold weather conditions to check ramp angles, mounting positions and ski constructions. One of the techs shed light on his personal experience once.

While trying to get the best out of his work in one of the season’s classic races, Leo Mussi felt the need to open up to The Associated Press. He had said, “We are really a little strange, I would say, too, us service guys. It’s a tough job, physically, mentally. You travel a lot, you are on the road. But it’s a kind of drug, too, this job.”
Leo works under Ski manufacturer Fischer at present, and he has served Italian Kristian Ghedina, and now American Steven Nyman, for over three decades. Nyman had once said, “Leo is basically like a European father figure to me. I don’t even question him. I put the skis on and see they are going to be fast.”
