Lindsey Vonn is one of those athletes who are too good to be tied down to just one sport. The alpine skier lives for the thrill of the sport. She is not amongst the athletes that just disappear upon retirement. Perhaps this is the reason many teams from various sports wanted her to join them.

Still one of the most talked-about athletes in the world, Vonn once had the opportunity to race as a professional driver in the F1. The offer not only fulfilled her lust for speed but also came with a significant financial advantage.

The financial side of F1 lured Lindsey Vonn

Imagining Lindsey Vonn coursing through an F1 track is much like seeing her course through an F1 track. The legendary skier lives for the thrill of speed and competition, and the F1, much like alpine skiing, perfectly combines both. One significant advantage that F1 holds over alpine skiing is the monetary compensation.

Vonn’s ties to the F1 world came with her sponsors, Red Bull. The brand which owns two F1 teams also advised her if it didn’t work out, she could try out NASCAR stock car racing. The offer was a lucrative one to Vonn for not one but two reasons — her love for speed and the substantial income.

Talking about the same, Vonn said, “The salary of one racer is probably the total amount of money ski racing has for their annual budget as a sport. I bet Lewis (Hamilton) makes way more money than all of the ski racing combined.”

However, Lindsey could not see her dream fulfilled because of the terms laid in front of her. They looked for a three-year commitment deal and could not get pregnant during that period. But Vonn wasn’t sure if she wanted to do that.

When Vonn wanted to race against men

Lindsey Vonn has always been a competitor. She always looked for ways to improve her form and speed in any way possible. The skier used to practice with men as she realized the difference in the performance of both genders was not too big. Hence, she once petitioned to compete against men on the World Cup circuit.

Video checks were done, and Vonn was just 200ths or 300ths of a second behind Aksel Svindal. He was a two-time alpine skiing Olympic gold medalist from Norway, and one of the greatest skiers of all time. But it did not happen, as Vonn’s petition got denied. Many sports traditionalists were against the idea of racing against men because of biological differences between the genders.
