“One, zero,” counted Mikaela Shiffrin in her recent Instagram video. But what was she counting? One, zero…zero? Was she referring to her hundredth World Cup victory? No, not yet. That record is still on pause. The numbers referred to her level of discomfort.

Discomfort while… drumroll please… “making turns”. Making turns while skiing. Yes. You got that right. Mikaela Shiffrin is back on the snow. And even though the numbers are supposed to indicate discomfort, one and zero don’t seem to be that bad. Well, as long as the maximum level of discomfort is 5 or maybe more. We don’t know the exact number yet, but she did look good.

In the video captioned, “She movin’!😋”, fans got to see Mikaela stretching and putting on her ski gear, all to the tunes of the popular song My Type by Saint Motel. It’s safe to say that the mood was quite chill. We also got a glimpse of her dog chewing on a snack. A little extra cuteness is always welcome, right?

Finally, the moment arrived, and it was a heartening one. Although she cannot be expected to be at her 100% just yet, she seemed reasonably comfortable on the snow. She even managed to tackle a bump. Okay, I’ll concede when she said, “It’s bumpy,” it didn’t bring back good memories, but she handled it pretty well. Despite the progress, Mikaela made sure not to go overboard. “Was a successful on snow test. We did three runs. Nothing crazy, but that was so fun.”

For the uninitiated, the ongoing FIS Ski World Cup has been one laced with injuries. Well-known names like Cyprien Sarrazin and Gino Caviziel were both airlifted from Bormio after crashing. Mikaela Shiffrin met with her accident chasing her hundredth World Cup win in Killington, Vermont, on November 30. The accident gave her a puncture wound to her abdomen and severe muscle trauma. Since then, she has tried her best to keep fans in the loop of her recovery. Some of the moments captured in those updates were particularly difficult. So, the recent video came as a ray of hope. It showed how tenacious she is—something skiing fans will be quite familiar with.

Last year in January, Mikaela Shiffrin suffered one of the most horrible crashes of her career in a World Cup downhill race in Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy. Having lost control trying to land after a jump, she slid down a patch of snow before crashing into the safety net at a high speed. As a result of the accident, Mikaela sprained her MCL and suffered a tibiofibular ligament injury in her left knee. She had to be airlifted.

Cut to six weeks later, Mikaela Shiffrin was back in the World Cup again. Guess what she did. She left her competitors Zrinka Ljutic and Michelle Gisin in the dust (or, in this case, the snow) beating them by 1.24 seconds and 1.34 seconds respectively. That became her 96th World Cup win. Crazy. And now that she is back on the snow again, she will soon be attempting something crazier. Her hundredth World Cup victory. If she does that, she will become the first Alpine skier to ever hit the three-figure mark. Let’s hope that happens sooner than later.
