The Lauberhorn race in Switzerland is well-known for its lengthy racetracks which resulted in a lowered starting point four years back. Though the area provides a much better gliding experience, it also makes the mountain-top ski destination harder to navigate. At Saturday’s race, the three-time winner at Wengen, Norwegian alpine ski racer Aleksander Aamodt Kilde suffered a terrifying accident.
Kilde was airlifted to a Swiss hospital where his long-time girlfriend and alpine skiing legend Mikaela Shiffrin visited him. Shiffrin returned for her race, meanwhile, the 31-year-old Norwegian shared his advice with fellow skiers.

Kilde underwent surgery on Saturday at a Bern hospital after a quick transfer. His injuries were serious, including wounds in his leg, a dislocated shoulder, and several cuts on his lips, chin, and nose. Kilde posted some pictures and videos on Instagram from his hospital room showing doctors’ interactions, including a shot capturing a sweet moment with Mikaela.

In the caption, he wrote, “Good luck to the boys in Kitz this weekend – hoping for an entertaining show at the @hahnenkammrennen, and – most importantly – that everyone makes it down safely. I’ll be watching!” Kilde also included a note of thanks for the hospital staff, “Mikaela and her family” who were there when he woke up further being grateful to his parents for being supportive.
A significant amount of time for his recuperation appears to have passed since Shiffrin was seen by his side in a previous update. Kilde shared selfies with her with the caption, “I’m here (and being taken care of by the one and only Mikaela Shiffrin).” Having seen her boyfriend in pain, Mikaela’s tension was apparent in her recent podium finish after which she quoted checking in on Kilde as the highlight of her day. In similar talks, Kilde also explained the impact responsible for his exit from this season.

The crash sparked safety concerns over packed race schedule
The two-time reigning champion of the downhill race and 2020 overall winner wrote, “Considering the impact of the crash and the fact that I went into the net at 120 km/hr, I am doing surprisingly well. Of course, I am thankful there’s no fracture – but I did sustain multiple injuries, including a pretty severe laceration in my calf with some nerve damage that required urgent surgery, and a shoulder dislocation.”

After the incident, many World’s top skiers including Marco Odermatt and Cyprien Sarrazin criticized the three-day-long races schedule on the racetrack. Kilde’s was the straight-second big injury in the event, after which Odermatt said, “Maybe we had a lesson now.”
