In 2021, in a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Bruce Lee’s daughter Shannon Lee opened up about the movie ‘Once Upon a Time In Hollywood’ by Quentin Tarantino. She was very furious about the way Tarantino portrayed Bruce Lee in the movie. In the furious excerpt, Shannon Lee mentions how the Brad Pitt scene from the movie portrays Lee in a defaming way.
Quentin Tarantino didn’t do justice to Bruce Lee
The movie ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ characterizes real-life superstars of the late ’60s, including beloved martial artist Bruce Lee, played by actor Mike Moh. Though she admits that Moh did an excellent job portraying Bruce Lee, Shannon Lee had her reasons to oppose Tarantino.
?As you already know, the portrayal of Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by Mr. Tarantino, in my opinion, was inaccurate and unnecessary to say the least. And while I am grateful that Mr. Tarantino has so generously acknowledged to Joe Rogan that I may have my feelings about his portrayal of my father, I am also grateful for the opportunity to express this: I?m really fucking tired of white men in Hollywood trying to tell me who Bruce Lee was,? Shannon Lee said as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.?
According to her, Lee would have never disrespected or taunted his opponent as was depicted in the scene. Shannon Lee demanded answers from Tarantino for his hatred toward the legendary martial artist. She talks about how hard it was for her father to come all the way from China and perform in Hollywood with a broken accent. Her father’s confidence, passion, and skill are seen as skepticism, disinterest, and incompetence, which she finds unfair.?
What more did Hollywood think of the legend?
While some see Bruce Lee as a martial arts legend, many beg to differ. Some naysayers didn’t believe in Lee’s skills, and were only left with one coping mechanism, which was criticism, but not in a constructive way. Even though he was born in San Francisco, critics saw him from a different perspective. Despite the backlashes, Lee achieved a lot of things in just a life span of 32 years. His early death didn’t make him a forgettable figure.
Lee is still an inspiration for a lot of MMA prodigies. His defensive style of martial arts was the most unique thing anyone could ever observe. Jeet Kune Do which is a hybrid form of martial arts was created and taught all by Lee. Lee’s work still speaks for itself and leaves nothing to say for those who try to defame him.
