The city of New York is home to some of the most iconic franchises in sporting history. Right from the Knicks in the NBA to the Giants in the NFL, every franchise from the city carries its own prestige along with the pressure of achieving success.

However, their franchises seem far from their best at the moment. And with the Yankees losing to their fiercest rivals, the Boston Red Sox this Tuesday, New York added to an unwanted drought they currently possess.

New York continues to wait for a major title following Yankees’ AL Wildcard loss

Although the Yankees suffered a dip in form late in the MLB regular season, they sealed a playoff spot in the most dramatic fashion. During their final game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Aaron Judge hit a shot which allowed Tyler Wade to complete a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

While they made the playoffs with a 92-70 record, their match against the Red Sox didn’t go so well. Despite their best efforts, the team from the Bronx suffered a 6-2 loss, which ended another campaign for glory in utter disappointment.

Along with the Yankees, the city of New York were also left empty-handed. Not just in terms of a World Series, but in terms of a major trophy altogether. The Yankees’ lost meant New York failed to win a major trophy in over a decade, which is the first time they have such a drought since 1905.

During that period, they went on a winless streak for 16 years before its MLB franchise, the New York Giants (now San Francisco Giants) won the World Series in 1921.

Which franchise won the city’s last major title?

Their current New York Giants, who compete in the NFL achieved this feat in 2011. They embarked on a successful saw them win the National Football Conference before beating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI 21-17.

Although the victory came on February 5, 2012, any New York franchise can only attempt to win a major trophy after that date next year. Can the iconic city end its drought in 2022? Only time will tell.
