Teams may not take spring training results to reflect nearly as much as regular season showings; but when a scoreline reads one team to have a multiple of the other team’s home runs, surely it merits notice. And it seemed as though that is exactly what happened when the St. Louis Cardinals took on the Washington Nationals in a Grapefruit League game. On the back of a stellar 8th innings which saw the Cardinals score 15 runs, they ran out 29-8 winners in the match.

Spring training is usually not reflective of a team’s real strength. Most players are either warming up or some teams may even be experimenting with the line-up as the action builds into the Opening day. But usually, the scoreline doesn’t read like that of a video game. And certainly not when the teams matching up are as grave a mismatch on paper as the Cardinals and the Nationals.

Fans express surprise at the scoreline
The St. Louis Cardinals have not exactly been famous for setting the league alight with their offense; At least not in recent times. So perhaps people were all well within their right when they expressed their complete and utter surprise at the Cardinals managing such a ridiculous-looking scoreline in the first place. Cardinals fans, however, were only there to perpetuate the hype.

And with some of the watching fans, they decided to take it even a step further, asking the Cardinals to continue piling on the runs even as the game progressed.
Ummmmmmmm wtf is going on in this game?!?!

A few other fans still were just refusing to believe what was painfully obvious from the score.
How the fuck are the Cardinals up 28-8?

The Cardinals are defeating the Nationals 28-4.
I don't have anything to add. Just wanted to tweet that score.

The Cardinals had a fifteen (15) run 8th inning vs the Nationals today and lead 28-4. Anibal Sanchez and Cade Cavalli both allowed 10 earned runs.
It’s obviously just spring training, but these things are always wild to see.

The return of Pujols
Some fans, though, attributed the sudden bump in output to the last time the Cardinals were a feared offense. A time when a certain #5 jersey with the name Albert Pujols took home plate and left pitchers trembling to take the mound.
Naturally the Cardinals score 28 runs the first game Pujols is back, I’d expect nothing less

Think the Cardinals offense was excited to have Pujols back pic.twitter.com/m4BhEErqzT

Albert Pujols’ return to the lineup might well have given the Cardinals a shot in the arm offensively, but whether or not this can translate into some real output over the course of the season remains to be seen.
What do you think? Can the Cardinals carry their form through and make it big during the regular season as well? Or could it be that their line-up is now taking on a separate offensive identity?
