A rider mounting a frenzied bull and attempting to stay atop the beast despite the bull’s best efforts to knock the rider off – that’s the sport of bull riding for you. It is risky because the animals have little compassion for the riders who fall, notwithstanding the pressure it puts on the animals themselves. Showcasing one of the most dangerous sports in the world in all its fiery glory, the annual Rodeo Houston Finals were held a few weeks ago. Popular cowboy JB Mauney was knocked unconscious by a charging bull at a recent event, but he is expected to make a full recovery. This wasn’t the PBR world champion rider’s first trip to the emergency room, however; he’d been there many times before.
A video recapping the cowboy’s 2019 injuries was posted by Professional Bull Riders (PBR) in 2019. With over 300,000 views, the video quickly gained widespread attention.

Mauney’s experience at this year’s finals, didn’t go as planned since the bull tossed him off the front and into the metal chute, where he banged his head and fainted. This was without doubt a horrific event, but the cowboy had suffered much worse in the past. The 2019 PBR footage proves without a reasonable doubt that the cowboy had several injuries that year.
Mauney was thrown from the bull in the first round of the Chicago competition, landing on his left wrist after 7.98 seconds. Mauney rode the bull for 8 seconds in the third round of the Sacramento competition, earning him an incredible 88 points, but the bull immediately went to stomp on his left leg after bucking him off.
Mauney’s first-round performance in Kansas City was unfortunately, a failure; he was only on the bull for two seconds when it rushed him, injuring Mauney in the abdomen. In round 2 of the Sioux Falls tournament, the bull rapidly knocked down Mauney, who fell and injured his head on the ground but was aided by the rescuers in the arena.

A true bull riding champion
In the annals of the Professional Bull Riders, JB Mauney has a prestigious place. The North Carolina native has been plagued by a series of major injuries during his career, which have had far-reaching effects on him professionally. His 18-year career began in 2005; therefore, his seven-month layoff due to a shoulder injury a few years ago, was the longest in his career.

Throughout his nearly two-decade-long career as a professional rider, Mauney has sustained scores of injuries, including a fractured jaw, a broken collarbone, and a near-deadly liver laceration. Despite being one of the most injured bull riders in history, this cowboy has broken more records than anybody else by making it to the PBR finals more often than the average rider. The fact that he never fails to amaze the crowd, is an absolute highlight.
