There is a large fan base for bull riding, despite the dangers involved. As a means of providing entertainment for these patrons, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) organizes bull riding competitions. The 2023 San Angelo Xtreme Bulls finals took place on Sunday, an event that supporters had been anticipating for a long time.

On Easter Sunday, after almost two weeks of anticipation, a sold-out crowd flocked to the San Angelo Coliseum to see the Xtreme Bulls. A total of 36 riders, including both established stars and relative novices, were given a shot at the title. The world champions may have dominated the competition, but the underdogs won the hearts of the fans.

Most spectators expect to watch a match between two world champions, but the real treat is when the underdogs take on the top dogs. Stetson Wright, a two-time PRCA world champion, is well-known in the realm of bull riding. Wright rode the bull called ‘Hondo’ yesterday and received 83 points from the judges, who were impressed with his performance. His effort landed him in the top 10 of the competition’s leaderboard. Wright won the PCRA global championship last year; his dominance in the competition was anticipated and warranted.

With a score of 79, Tyler Taylor was just on the cusp of making the playoffs. However, he wouldn’t know his destiny until the last moment of the event. When World Champion Sage Kimzey rode ‘Crash Cart’ two riders later, tensions were raised. With an 87 individual score, Kimzey stunned not only the audience but also the judges and took first place.

Taylor was becoming nervous since there were just 10 competitors left. He wouldn’t know if he had been chosen until three other riders had dropped out. After the Bulls shook off the first four, they gave Taylor some love as the underdog made it to the finals.
