On November 6th, 2021, the bodybuilding fraternity woke up to the news of Shawn Rhoden’s untimely passing. He won the 2018 Mr. Olympia and became a force to be reckoned with. As a response to a friend slipping into an early quietus, his colleague and friend Sergio Oliva Jr, son of legendary bodybuilder Sergio Oliva, detailed his death and how the sport of bodybuilding was the root cause of it and not the heart attack.

Earlier, he explained, “People need to know that this wasn’t a suicide.” Sergio spoke about how Rhoden’s troubles in the sport of bodybuilding affected his heart and left him “broken.” As Rhoden landed himself in various problems, Oliva Jr. continued to support him for a long time.

Sergio Oliva goes on an emotional outburst for Shawn Rhoden

He took the news hard and detailed the stress that comes with a bodybuilding career that ultimately led to Rhoden’s death. “Shawn didn’t die from gear. He’s not getting ready for a show, he’s not taking all these cutters and s**t that would affect his heart. The thing that killed him is this sport. Not the way you think, it’s because he couldn’t do what he loved,” mentioned Sergio, via Instagram, back in 2021.

After that, he drew eyeballs on the various causes of his death. “The stress, the constant disappointment, constantly getting his hopes up, getting his dreams toyed with. It just took a toll on him. He couldn’t do what he loved. That’s all he wanted to do. This f**king sport, this f**king lying b**tch—that’s what killed him.”

After all the stress he endured, Oliva detailed how his heart gave up on him. “He died from his heart, probably, yeah for sure, being broken. So, I just wanted to clear the air before people start to say s**t,” mentioned Oliva. It was a shocking moment in bodybuilding, and fans were left shocked back then. Hopefully, fans would remember Shawn Rhoden for his iconic bodybuilding moments rather than his demise.
