Being one of the most influential bodybuilders of the 1970s and 1980s, Arnold Schwarzenegger is a household name. The seven-time Mr. Olympia, originally from Austria and relatively new to the greatest nation, the United States, had a difficult road out there. The hero of the bodybuilding world was born in Thal, Austria, on July 30, 1947, only two years after World War II ended. Very recently, he did make a strong statement about his late father, Gustav Schwarzenegger.

Arnold Schwarzenegger just posted a video on YouTube in which he discusses the brutality of World War Two while touring the former Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz. Seeing so many deaths in one spot has left the bodybuilder numbed.

Later in the video, the seven-time Mr. Olympia goes into detail about his father, Gustav Schwarzenegger, an Austrian police chief, postal inspector, member of the Sturmabteilung (SA), and military police officer. His father, a “broken man,” he describes him, fell prey to Hitler’s ideology in Austria, where he describes his childhood.

In the video, Schwarzenegger says, “I’ve talked a lot about my father and the broken men that I was surrounded by when I grew up in Austria after the Second World War. You know, they drank to numb their pain. Their bodies were riddled with injuries and shrapnel from the eve of war, and their hearts and their minds were equally riddled with guilt.”

Schwarzenegger discusses the fate of Nazi troops after World War Two. In addition to losing the war, he describes how these men’s decision to support Hitler’s beliefs left them full of remorse. The main theme of the bodybuilding legend is that these “broken men” entered the war out of pure anger and that their road of hatred ultimately cost them everything.
