NHL fans are among the most passionate fans in the sports world. From supporting their respective teams to criticizing players when they can’t perform, NHL fans know all about showing tough love. However, they never fail to show their unwavering support, whether their team wins, loses, or fights on the ice. Ice hockey fans are also passionate about the mascots who represent their team.

When one user asked, “What NHL mascot makes the least amount of sense?” in the r/hockey Reddit community, thousands of fans commented on the post. Within 20 hours, 1.9k fans had already commented on the thread. Many fans gave their verdict, while others started debates.

“Why isn’t Buffalo’s a buffalo?” asked one fan in the comments. “It’s a sabre tooth tiger,” answered another, indicating the relation between Buffalo Sabres and the prehistoric saber toothed tiger. “Sparky. (RIP Long Island dragons)” wrote one fan. “Detroit’s makes no sense to me.” another fan wrote.

The Reddit thread was not done yet. “Why is the flames mascot a dog, though? I always thought it’d be a horse,” a Reddit user commented. “Every firehouse has gotta have a dog,” another user replied. While fans also named other mascots, a few stood out. Not only did many fans agree about these few mascots not making sense, but their mention also ignited long discussion threads.

“What the f***k is Dallas’ mascot? Looks like a moldy mop,” a fan wrote. “Victor E. Green is a nug of weed, thank you very much.” another replied to the comment. His reply also got 1.7k likes, more than the 1.3k likes of the original remark. “He is an alien from the ‘stars’. He has hockey stick blades coming out of the top of his head. Yeah, I don’t get it either, but kids seem to like him,” replied another fan. “Our mascot is just a color-based pun. Victor E Green for those who are unfamiliar,” one fan wrote about the Dallas Stars mascot.

Many fans seemed to agree the Philadelphia Flyers mascot, Gritty made the least sense. “Gritty. But only because he is still a mascot. He should be GM by now,” one user wrote. “Gritty is an adult mascot, not for kids,” commented one community member. “Gritty, but that’s why we love him,” wrote another user.

“I love that Youppi was essentially ‘taken in’ by the Habs after being discarded like a dumpster baby by the MLB.”, one fan wrote about the Montreal Canadiens mascot. However, another user wrote, “Why does Youppi always look like he’s a few weeks out from a tough divorce where he also lost custody?”
