“It Felt Odd”: Wayne Gretzky’s Stardom Once Led to a ‘Bizarre’ Act by Crazy Fans

It won’t be wrong to say that Wayne Gretzky is the biggest hockey legend in the world. Fans from all over the world have done the craziest things for him. However, initially, Gretzky felt a bit odd to see so much love coming from his fans. As he was not used to such stardom, he expressed how he was once startled by a ‘bizarre’ act by his crazy fans in his book.

In his book, ‘On Family, Hockey and Healing’, Gretzky recalled instances where fans would simply drive in front of his fans to click his photographs. Fans would eagerly come to see his house, as it was the “where WAYNE GRETZKY grew up!”. Moreover, he mentioned a bizarre incident when two girls pulled grasses from his lawn.

Wayne’s stardom as a hockey player is unmatched. He achieved several titles and recognition that loudly justify it. Of course, a player like Gretzky will have fans who will do anything to meet him. In his book, he commented on it, saying: “It felt odd the first time a stranger knocked on our door and asked me to come out and pose for a picture, but I’m used to it by now.”

However, besides fans lingering in front of his place, the hockey player described an incident where two fans plucked grasses from his lawn and got away.

In his book, Wayne stated that on a fine evening, he was sitting in his living room looking out from his window. He spotted a car driving in front of his house. Wayne thought fans had come to see the “Wayne Gretzky house”. Suddenly, he saw two girls, around ten to eleven years, approaching his lawn. What he saw after that was completely “bizarre”! He stated:

“They bent down and started pulling up the grass! When they had a few clumps, they raced back to the car, and it sped off down the street. I just shook my head, amazed that anyone would want a piece of Gretzky grass. It was truly bizarre.”

Although it sounds weird to pull out grass from someone’s lawn and run away, for those girls, it would have been huge. It belonged to Wayne Gretzky’s lawn. Such is the stardom of the hockey legend.
