In an interview with MensHealth on March 2022, Ronnie Coleman shed some light on the secret to becoming the greatest. The all-time record holder, for the most number of Mr.Olympia wins, advised upcoming bodybuilders to become better at their sport.

For most aspiring bodybuilders, Coleman, 58 is an idol. He won Mr.Olympia 8 times in a row. In the interview, he shares his secret to becoming the greatest.

Ronnie Coleman’s inquisitive nature

When asked what advice the former athlete would give to youngsters who wish to compete, he explains that the reason for his success was probably because he was always surrounded by health experts, nutritionists, and equally great bodybuilders.


It is no secret that Ronnie was a part of the golden era of bodybuilding and competed with top guns like Flex Wheeler and Jay Cutler. But his idea of becoming the greatest stems from a deep-rooted desire to learn from the best.

“When I started, Brian showed me a lot since I didn’t know anything about the sport. Later on, Flex Wheeler introduced me to Chad Nicholls, and he taught me everything I needed to know about competing as a pro.” stated the bodybuilder.

Flex, rivals with Coleman had once admitted after the latter got a perfect score. That he was “out of his league.”  Flex had lost to Coleman for the second time in a row when he made the statement.

The importance of asking questions

Coleman further explains that he was inspired by the victories of Flex Wheeler and decided to learn his trade secrets. He said, “I saw Flex was winning all of these shows. So, I thought to myself  I need to have a talk with him because I don’t know what’s going on.”

Like any discipline, asking the right questions to the right people becomes pivotal in learning and excelling. Ronnie Coleman knows this all too well. “I went to Flex and asked him a bunch of questions, and he helped me out a whole lot.”, he continued, “Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you want to know something. I’m really good at that. I figured that out in college, and I still ask questions if I know someone can answer them for me.”

After 13 surgeries on his spine, Ronnie initially believed he would never be able to walk again, but he is now capable of doing so with some help. The retired bodybuilder is the proprietor of a business with the same name that offers bodybuilders the clothes and supplements they require to further their training. He continues to be an inspiration to young talents even after having lost most of his mobility.
