The US Open 2019 is almost here and every player will be gunning for the final Grand Slam of the year. As expected, the fans will be flocking to Flushing Meadows to see their favourite players duke it out. For the fans watching from the comfort of their homes, the dependence will be on commentators.

In the United States, with ESPN in charge of broadcasting, they have their own commentary team for the US Open 2019. Some of the most well-known commentators and pundits are, Darren Cahill who commentates for ESPN, along with Cliff Drysdale, Brad Gilbert, Jason Goodall, Sam GoreJohn McEnroe, Patrick McEnroe, Chris McKendry, Tom Rinaldi. Another well-known figure is Patrick Mouratoglou who often commentates for Eurosport. The US Open 2019 will also have Robbie Koenig, who broadcasts on Tennis Channel as well as the online tennis broadcast site TennisTV and even on Amazon Prime. Finally, Chris Fowler, who works for ESPN, is yet another well-known broadcaster.

Among the female commentators, the line-up consists of Pam Shriver, Chris Evert, Mary Joe Fernandez, Alexandra Stevenson, all of whom are either tennis experts, or former champions. Also in the line-up is Rennae Stubbs who worked at Seven Network between 2011 and 2018 as an analyst for women’s matches. Finally, completing the commentary team is Catherine Ann Whitaker, who has covered tennis for Eurosport, Amazon Prime Video UK, BBC Radio 5 Live, BeIn Sports, Perform and IMG Media.

ESPN’s coverage of qualifying has expanded for 2019, with ESPN+ covering five courts from August 19-23. After the first day, ESPNEWS will offer six hours of qualifying each day through Friday also starting at 11 a.m.

In total, more than 600 people (some on site since mid-July) provide more than 1,300 hours of television across three weeks, including qualifying. The entire tournament is covered, all 16 courts, with most days lasting 12 or more hours.

Coverage is provided to virtually every corner of the globe. Equipment: 10 40’ sea containers (63,000 kg), plus air freight (35,000 kg) and road containers (25,000) totalling 9,500 pieces of technical equipment.

19 control rooms, three host sets, and 177 cameras including one SpiderCam. 22,000-square-feet of production space created specifically for the US Open.

Also, ESPN boasts of multi-screen coverage and live-streaming on the ESPN app. The ESPN program will be hosted by Sam Gore and Luke Jensen. Production will be enhanced with press conferences, interviews and features that will be added during court changeovers and between matches.

All six screens can be expanded to full screen or picture-in-picture at the touch of the remote button. In addition, DirecTV will offer interactive social media options for fans, plus real-time scoring and draws – all without leaving the match the viewer is watching.
