Uncharted movie history

Fans who were thrilled about the movie finally being underway were not very excited about this announcement. In their defense, the movie was first announced in 2008 and has been ‘in development’ ever since. And now, 12 years later, in the middle of a global pandemic, the fans get their wish. They have the right to be frustrated.

The movie had a rocky road up to the announcement made by Tom yesterday. In 2009, it was confirmed that the movie was definitely in the works. Actor Nathan Filion even showed interest in playing Nathan Drake and started a Twitter campaign, urging the fans to support him.

In 2010, Mark Wahlberg confirmed in an interview that he was discussing a role in the movie. The script was being written by David O. Russell.  But in 2011, Russell walked away from the project and went on to direct Silver Linings Playbook (which won an Oscar). By mid-2011, it was announced that Neil Burger would replace Russell.

In 2012, Burger dropped out of the project. Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen said that they were approached multiple times to write the film but they declined. In 2014, it was reported that Seth Gordon was working on the film, set to release in 2016. But he too left the project in 2015. Meanwhile, Chris Pratt was approached for the role of Nathan Drake, but he declined it.

2016-present

Joe Carnahan was reportedly working on the film’s script in 2016. Later that year, Shaun Levy was announced as the director. Finally, Carnahan announced on Instagram that the script had been completed. In 2017, Tom Holland was announced as the lead actor to play Nathan Drake. Unfortunately, Shawn Levy left soon after to work on Free Guy.

In 2019, after Dan Trachtenberg left the project, Travis Knight was set to direct the movie. However, he had scheduling conflicts with Tom Holland and eventually left the project.
