Conor McGregor is currently on the road to make his Hollywood debut alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in Road House. The UFC’s biggest superstar to date is still recovering from his injury, with no definite return date or opponent yet. With McGregor making big steps outside the UFC, do we see him getting back in the Octagon? That is the question Chael Sonnen took up in a recent video on his YouTube channel.

Sonnen discussed the question in classic Sonnen fashion in a fifteen-minute clip. He used the example of Dwayne ‘The Rock‘ Johnson, to talk about the athletes who have transitioned into Hollywood before.
Chael Sonnen compares Conor McGregor and ‘The Rock’
In his video, Chael Sonnen talked about McGregor and ‘The Rock’ to discuss the possibility of McGregor’s Hollywood success. Sonnen said that McGregor’s identity right now is that of a fighter, but that may not always be the case.
He took Dwayne Johnson as an example of one such professional identity change, “There was a time when ‘The Rock’ was a wrestler. This is who he is. He’s a third-generation guy…There was real truth when ‘The Rock’ said it. But then he found something else. Took that same hard work, took that same charisma, and went and did something else. Now that’s who he is”

Sonnen mentioned ‘The Rock‘ to show how he moved on from a two-generational trade as a professional wrestler to pursue a Hollywood career. He belongs to pro-wrestling royalty as his father, Rocky Johnson, and grandfather, Peter Maivia, were both professional wrestlers. He floated the idea that McGregor might take a similar approach if he finds success as an actor.
“Conor’s not there yet with acting. I’m just suggesting for you that if he does find something different, and he does like it, I don’t know how bullish I am on the idea that he’s ever coming back.”
Fortunately for McGregor fans, his financial success doesn’t seem to have affected his passion for fighting yet. Despite being the richest fighter in the sport of MMA, Conor McGregor has walked into the Octagon on multiple occasions against formidable opponents.

Chael Sonnen observed that Conor McGregor has not mentioned Dustin Poirier’s name in a while. He said that even though McGregor guaranteed they would fight again, he has not mentioned Poirier, but shifted his focus to other names recently. Sonnen added that McGregor is the type of guy to get the fight he wants and Poirier was the fight at one point, but not anymore.
McGregor and Poirier have fought each other three times. They’ve both knocked each other out over the first two fights. With the third fight having a rather unfortunate ending, the pair left the door open to a rematch in the days following the bout.
