The third-round of the welterweight contest saw a pause in action after McKee’s mouthpiece went flying out. Although this is a routine occurrence in MMA, what followed next was unprecedented. The ground staff around the Octagon couldn’t seem to locate the mouthpiece and referee Jason Herzog looked baffled.

What’s more, as several UFC staff members involved themselves in the search, it was revealed that the guard was under the cage. Such a prolonged break during a back-and-forth UFC scrap isn’t something that makes for everyday television. A quick rinse later, Rhys McKee was ready to go, and the fighters went to work.

Welterweight Alex Morono speaks out

The victor of the aforementioned welterweight scrap in Alex Morono spoke to the media following his decision win. The 18-6 athlete was surprised, to say the least, by the events that transpired. Moreover, he spoke out on the fact that both athletes got a chance to take a sizeable breather due to the pause in the fight.

“That was nobody’s fault. I guess I took a breath, you know. I wasn’t tired, you know I looked tired. When I fought Jordan Mean, that fight finished and I was not tired and I was extraordinarily disappointed in myself. If I’m not tired going into the third round then I have not fought hard enough.”

“I could have fought another two rounds if I had to and that was certainly strange. It’s funny I brought a back-up mouthpiece but it’s at the hotel so I mean I don’t know, that was a weird one. Didn’t know what to think. First time I had an experience like that before.”
