Conceding a loss in a title fight is undoubtedly a huge punch to the gut. Every fighter has a distinct way of dealing with the same. However, it seems like the UFC Bantamweight giant, Dominick Cruz, has an unorthodox way to look at a setback on the big stage.

The 135lbs stalwart compares the pain of a loss to that of heartbreak. This, in a certain way, does make a lot of sense. Perhaps it is too personal a case to generalize across a series of fighters.

“The only way I can put it into words is like after you’ve been with somebody, like a girl maybe, for 3 or 4 years, then she breaks up with you. And then you’re just at home, kind of sick to your stomach, just dealing with it. Trying to look at the responsibility factors, how I created this scenario,” said Dominick Cruz to Ariel Helwani, while underlining his struggle.

However, there is a silver lining to this dark cloud as far as The Dominator is concerned. “And then what’s the lesson to be learned, ‘You never waste a good crisis,’ is one of my favorite quotes.

A loss at the biggest stage in the world is bound to affect a fighter adversely. However, what matters is how they look at it and how they pull themselves out of it.

As long as the fighter takes a loss for what it is, a lesson, he or she is likely to improve. However, harboring an unhealthy amount of resentment and self-pity will only push them down a darker road.

Dominick Cruz, not the only one responsible for his current predicament?

Losing a fight on account of someone else’s fault is like rubbing salt to an open wound. Cruz took on Henry Cejudo at the UFC 249 co-main event. And as far as the 35-year-old is concerned, it is the referee’s incompetence that lost him the UFC bantamweight title.

Cruz called longtime referee, Keith Peterson out for failing the ‘smell test’. Following a controversial end to the fight, Cruz accused Peterson of drinking on the job. According to the former bantamweight champion, this led to the premature end of his fight.

Peterson waived the fight off with mere seconds remaining on the clock as Cruz was receiving a slew of heavy shots to the head. However, Cruz argues that he was trying to find his feet during the dying seconds of the fight.

Acting like the true warrior that he is, Cruz admitted that he was at fault. The legend took responsibility for his actions and mistakes that put him in a position like that, where the referee had to come to his rescue.
