Throwback: Dustin Poirier Reveals Intense Weight Cuts to Make 145 Pounds

Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor faced off against each other in a featherweight bout six years ago on September 27, 2014. Going into the fight, both men were on a three-fight win streak in the UFC. The build-up to the fight was intense as Conor relentlessly engaged in trash talk that enraged Dustin Poirier. 

Conor McGregor stopped Dustin Poirier in the very first round of the fight and legitimized his position as a star in the UFC. Following his loss to Conor, Dustin moved up to lightweight where he has been fighting ever since.  

Dustin Poirier reveals insane details about weight cuts. 

On the sixth anniversary of the fight, we look at an interview that Dustin Poirier gave before his fight against Dan Hooker.

Dustin Poirier was asked, “What did you walk around at featherweight as compared to now?”  To which ‘The Diamond’ replied, “Not a whole lot different honestly. I used to get heavier when I was at featherweight – 190 pounds. I would balloon up to 190 pounds, a couple of weeks after the fight.”

Aaron Bronsteter went on to ask, “I don’t mean to get too personal here but what was the craziest cut you made to featherweight?” Poirier replied saying:

“The biggest in an amount to showing up fight week would be when I fought Cub Swanson in London. I showed up, of course. I was drinking a lot of water and stuff. I was 176 pounds, and I made the 146 limit the same week.” 

Dustin further added that he would enter the octagon for a fight at about 176 pounds. He also stated, “I was 176 whenever we fought, but I felt it. I was too much water. I felt flat-footed and kinda bloated. That’s not good for you, man.”

His switch to lightweight revived his career. Not having to cut an insane amount of weight during fight week, reflected in his performances. The Lafayette native is one of the most exciting fighters at lightweight and has delivered some breathtaking fights at lightweight.
