History Between Tyron Woodley And Stephen Thompson

The first time the two fighters went toe to toe in the octagon was in November 2016. Woodley became the newly minted champion by taking the title off of Robbie Lawler with a first-round knockout. The 37-year-old defended his title against Stephen Thompson by taking the win with a majority-draw. The official judges scored the fight 47-47, 47-47, 48-47 in favor of Woodley. This was an accurate depiction of exactly how close the fight was.

UFC 209 lost a lot of luster with Khabib Nurmagomedov backing out of his interim title fight with Tony Ferguson because he fell ill while cutting weight.

Woodley managed to retain his title against the Wonderboy, however, both the fighters faced a lot of flak due to the quality of the fight that was put up. Thompson held his position at a long-range firing a handful of side-kicks to the body. The two fighters shadowed each other around the octagon unwilling to throw the first punch or to make the first move.

The fight saw rather extended periods of inactivity with both Woodley and Thompson acting like counter fighters. The fans got to see some action in the dying seconds of the final round as Woodley took Thompson to ground and showered him with punches. The ground strikes almost brought on a stoppage however Thompson managed to see it to the end.
