Another member of the Nurmagomedov family is ready to begin his UFC journey. Umar Nurmagomedov will make his UFC debut on Fight Island next month in July. He is the cousin of UFC Lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The UFC signed Umar at the beginning of this year. He fights in the Bantamweight division. Just like his elder cousin Khabib, Umar also has an undefeated professional record of 12-0. His last fight came in November last year under the banner of Gorilla Fighting Championship. He overcame the previously undefeated Argentine Braian Gonzales via a first-round rear-naked choke.

The UFC had planned for Umar to make his UFC debut at UFC 249 which would’ve been headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson. However, the pandemic prevented the event from happening and delayed Umar’s UFC debut. With Fight Island ready to go in action next month, Umar will finally get a chance to step under the bright lights of the UFC.
Umar’s manager Rizvan Magomedov revealed the news about his debut while talking to Championat. “July, Fight Island,” he said. He made no announcement regarding the opponent. Umar has the experience of fighting under Pro Fighting League, Fight Star, Samara MMA Federation, Battle on Volga, and GFC.

The fighting style of Umar is similar to his cousin Khabib, with whom he often trains with. Out of his twelve victories, six have come via stoppage while the others have gone to the judges’ scorecard. Khabib’s father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov is also the coach of Umar while he is in Dagestan. When he is in the USA, Umar trains at American Kickboxing Academy under coach Javier Mendes.

Former UFC Heavyweight champ Frank Mir holds Umar in extremely high regard. He was present ringside in Umar’s latest victory last year. Mir labeled him as the second-best fighter in the Nurmagomedov family behind Khabib. He added that Umar is one of the most completely well-rounded fighters coming out of Dagestan.

The UFC Bantamweight division has emerged as one of the deepest divisions in the UFC lately. Even the lowest-ranked Sean O’Malley is one of the fighters with the most hype around him in the UFC. The entry of Umar can make the division even more loaded and provide us with many more interesting fights in the future.
