At UFC 254, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje will face each other to become the undisputed champion of the UFC lightweight division. Speaking to the media, the two credited their upbringing, which has led them to this point.
Not only are they two of the best lightweights in the world, but they are also role models for the next generation. Khabib and Justin have always attributed their careers to the dedication of their parents at a very young age.

On the recent UFC embedded, Justin Gaethje’s parents were shown flying into Fight Island. The reporters asked Justin if this was a special moment for him. ‘The Highlight’ said, “My parents have never flown international, they got to fly business class. My dad retired a little bit over a year ago, he worked 37 years in a copper mine. My mom is going to retire after this fight.”
He continued, “If that bell rings at the beginning then I will secure that she will retire after this fight... Every piece of money they had, it went into me and my brother and my sister. We were two hours from any city. Going school clothes shopping was a vacation for us.”
‘The Highlight’ opened up on how they would drive for hours and spend the night and take financial hits for his wrestling tournaments. He claimed that there was no better feeling than to be able to repay the sacrifices made. Gaethje finished off by saying that although his parents will be there, the only voice he hears in the octagon will be that of his coach, Trevor Wittman.
Khabib Nurmagomedov on the value of family
During an event to honor his father, Khabib Nurmagomedov expressed the importance of being a great role model, not only in the octagon but outside competition as well. When asked what he prides himself the most about outside MMA, he said, “The most important thing for me is, to stay close with your family and friends.”
He explained that fame and money are temporary, as everything can change in a split second.

‘The Eagle’ added, “The most important thing for me it’s family. I’m so proud of this… I think I was a good kid for my parents.”
Khabib also touched on the animated video released by BT Sport ahead of UFC 254. He said, “It’s a great video, I really like this.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0) and Justin Gaethje (22-2) will use all the knowledge and skill they have acquired over the years to walk out of Fight Island as the undisputed UFC lightweight champion.
