According to Daniel Cormier, the UFC’s Welterweight division received a brand new title contender in the form of Gilbert Burns last Saturday. The Brazilian fighter dominated the Octagon for 5 complete rounds with former champion Tyron Woodley against him.
Even though he prefers the ground game and employing his jiu-jitsu, Durinho dished out a fabulous strike game. In fact, within the opening moments of the fight, “The Chosen One” suffered a nasty cut right above his left eye due to an early barrage of strikes.

UFC Boss Dana White was happy with Burns’ performance. He even stated that Burns will be in contention for the Welterweight title. However, it was the commentary team on the scene that actually birthed and hyped the narrative of Gilbert fighting for the title next.
Many fans and experts think that any such speculation is absurd. This is because there are many title contenders in the queue already. To name a few: Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards.
However, one of the commentators on the team, Daniel Cormier, stuck by his words when Ariel Helwani enquired about the same in the latest edition of his talk show. DC said:
“I can’t believe you don’t see it! First off, the victories that he has put together now? Since he moved up to 170? Amazing. Leon Edwards… Very deserving. But I think that Leon becomes a victim of the moment. A victim of what’s going on in the world. Can’t get into the country. Can’t figure out a way for them to fight. That’s the only reason he’s out of it.”
Daniel Cormier reveals that Kamaru Usman’s team does not think of Jorge Masvidal as a threat, the Gilbert Burns fight is the best bet
Carrying on, DC revealed that he spoke to Ali Abdelaziz before the Woodley-Burns fight. Apparently, Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal is a fight that is not really in the best interests of everyone.
DC said,
“Masvidal, I don’t know. I was talking to Ali [Abdelaziz] the other day. And Ali said, ‘man, this negotiation for the Masvidal fight has been very difficult.’ So, this is [what] I know form the backside, Usman’s manager. And also what I had seen. Honestly, the Usman team doesn’t even think that Masvidal is a real threat! They think he’s a journeyman!”

With the negotiation regarding the Masvidal fight failing and Leon Edwards stuck in England, do you think that Gilbert Burns might actually get a shot? It is important to note that Leon could very well reach the fight island for the fight.
Do you think DC’s theory will pan out?
