Tony Ferguson was as oblivious to the cancellation of UFC 249 as the general audience. He was in the middle of a telephonic interview when the news was broken to him.
The former interim Lightweight champ was doing a pre-fight interview with Orange County Register. The Costa Mesa Lightweight said that the last moment change of opponent wasn’t a big deterrent to his preparations. More importantly, he sounded like his confident self. He was in his bubble, unfazed with the outbreak of Coronavirus that has stopped the entire world.
Nineteen minutes into the interview, the news broke in. Dana White had just cancelled UFC 249 and all other events indefinitely. When Ferguson heard the news he was taken aback. Subsequently, a long silence prevailed on the call. And then came the typical Tony Ferguson reply.

“Ohhhhh well. I’m still gonna train,” exclaimed Ferguson.
Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje was going to be the headliner of UFC 249. The change in the initial main event took place because Khabib Nurmagomedov was stuck in Russia. A senator’s intervention is, supposedly, the real reason behind the cancellation. Whatever the reason may be, Tony Ferguson believes that it’s all for the greater good.
“Ummmm … you know what? I’m sure it’s for a good reason. Let’s be real. I gotta keep the faith,” Tony added. “I gotta keep this small circle close, bro, and just keep focusing on what we can control, which is our heart rate and our breathing.”
Tony Ferguson plans to change the variables into constants
At 36 years of age, Ferguson is unarguably the best fighter in the UFC right now to never even compete for a title. Although he has held the interim belt, that seems too little of an accolade for him. Tony has been a constant contender in one of the deepest divisions of the UFC for past few years.
But just as would expect from him, he doesn’t care about all this. At the end of the day, he is just happy to be fighting for a living.
Dude, I’m just gonna keep collecting trophies and doing my same shit,” Tony continued after taking an emotional pause. “Every single time I wake up in the morning when I do my work, say my prayers and I do (stuff), I hug my little boy … whew … kiss my wife. I just … keep doing what I’m doing. What am I gonna do?”

Ferguson also didn’t forget to thank his boss, Dana White, for the tireless efforts that he had put in to pull off UFC 249. Moreover, keeping up with the tradition of giving cryptic messages, Ferguson said he would put on muscles now.
“The constant is things are always gonna change. The variable is how am I gonna react to it?” Ferguson said. “So we could throw that variable, baby, and we make that the constant.”

“I’m gonna keep training, and you know what? I’m gonna put on some muscle. Dude, I’m skinny. I’m gonna put on some muscle.”
Ferguson may have been hinting towards moving up a weight class. However, it wouldn’t be wise to jump to that conclusion. Probably because despite seeing it fall for five times, the fans still want to witness Khabib vs Tony.
