Dustin Poirier looks forward to making a return to the octagon. And it’s the biggest and best fight that he is looking for. Hungry for a rematch with Conor McGregor, The Diamond is even open to take him on in a boxing match.

The former interim lightweight was looking to headline UFC San Diego against Dan Hooker. However, the Coronavirus epidemic has forced the UFC to delay all pending events to a later date.

“I’d love it at welterweight. I’d love it in a boxing ring or in MMA. I’ll take it at 185 [pounds], I don’t care. I just want the biggest fights that I can get, and that’s definitely one of them.”- Dustin Poirier

Even though Poirier prefers to achieve greatness in the lightweight division, he is willing to adjust weight classes for an opportunity to take on McGregor. Poirier is so hungry to take on a top tier fighter that he is willing to crossover to boxing as well.

Poirier did not fare well the last time he took on the Dubliner. The fight took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada back in 2014. McGregor took the win by dropping Poirier within two minutes of the first round.

Poirier has been thirsting for a rematch with McGregor ever since his loss. However, it is not revenge that drives the American Top Team fighter. It is the will to take on skilled fighters that are considered to be the top dogs of the lightweight division.

“Of course I’d rather have that. Like I said, I want the biggest and the highest-ranked guys that I can get. Yeah, I’m not circling back around to these guys or begging for fights.”- Dustin Poirier to MMA Fighting

McGregor claims that he wants his schedule to be rather active throughout 2020. However, the Coronavirus epidemic became an unforeseen obstacle for the Irishman.

“It just depends on what the UFC has in mind and Conor’s timeframe when he wants to fight,” Poirier said. “A lot of factors play into all this decision making. But I’m definitely open to the fight.”- Dustin Poirier

McGregor was slated to take on the winner of the title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. However, with the delay due to the virus and the Ramadan, Khabib is likely to be out of action until September. Poirier is more than happy to fill in for Khabib.

“I’ll fight Dan Hooker no problem, but my job is to get the biggest fights, the most money, get the highest-ranked opponents that I can get. So whenever I see people and opportunities that make sense, like me and Conor, of course, I would push for that.”- Dustin Poirier

The American fighter is still open to take on Hooker. However, he knows there are bigger fish to fry. And what fish is bigger than the 31-year-old, Conor McGregor.
