On his recent appearance at Brendan Schaub’s The Schaub Show, Chael Sonnen broke the news of Jon Jones’s next fight in UFC. If the MMA analyst is to be believed, Jon Jones’s proposed bout with former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic is canceled. Instead, ‘Bones’ will likely face the rising heavyweight prospect, Sergei Pavlovich, in August. He further applauded Jones for taking Cyril Gane’s fight even when he originally agreed to face Stipe Miocic. Blasting Jon Jones doubters, Sonnen further commended his mindset of always going up for the best possible opponent. He said:

” Jon Jones isn’t going anywhere and if Stipe goes up in smoke, he’s already set off the next big thing. You decide who it is. Oh, you have decided Sergei, then it is Sergei. That’s Jon Jones’s real attitude and not for nothing. He deserves…He deserves people…He’s a badass (nodding to Schaub)”

Jones, who had been teasing his heavyweight move for over a decade, finally made his much-anticipated divisional debut in January this year. The 35-year-old was originally scheduled to face Francis Ngannou, but before that could happen the ‘Predator’ left following failed contract negotiations with UFC. Next, heavyweight veteran Stipe was proposed to welcome ‘Bones’. But finally, it was Cyril Gane who got the chance to face the former Light-Heavyweight at UFC 285 with the UFC Heavyweight strap on the line. In the first heavyweight bout of his carrer, Jon Jones finished Gane with a guillotine choke in the first round itself. This dominant performance not just won him the heavyweight strap but, in the process, he also became one of the eight fighters to have held UFC gold in two separate weight classes.

Ever since his title victory, it was believed that Jones’s next opponent would likely be widely regarded heavyweight GOAT, Stipe Miocic. But going with Chael’s words about the fight, it seems like Sergei Pavlovich is next in line to face Jon Jones instead. The 6-foot-3 fighter is currently on a 6-fight win streak, all coming via first-round knockout. According to both Schaub and Sonnen, Sergei is a nightmare matchup for Jones. This could be credited to the scary knockout power of the Russian as well as his background in Greco-Roman Wrestling and Combat Sambo. This does not make him a potent threat on the feet, but on the ground as well.

Jon Jones is widely regarded as the greatest Mixed Martial Artist of all time. He became the youngest UFC champion at the age of 23, defended his title for a record 13 times, and has now become one of the few fighters to hold a UFC strap at two different divisions. A possible fight with Tyson Fury would have undoubtedly cemented his legacy further and earned him some serious cash. The current UFC Heavyweight champion realizes it well and is leaving no stone unturned to materializing the said bout. But it seems like Fury isn’t too keen on taking a fight under rules that favor the MMA fighter.
