The trilogy match between Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic is right around the corner. The winner of this hyped heavyweight main event will cement his name in the history of the UFC as the greatest heavyweight of all time.
DC is 41-YO, and rumors about his retirement keep surfacing. Would he continue to fight, irrespective of the UFC 252 result? Is a Jon Jones trilogy waiting for him next? His coach, Javier Mendez, who also trains with Khabib Nurmagomedov, has answered a few important questions about the future of this former Olympic wrestler and two-division world champion.

What does future hold for Daniel Cormier?
Remember when a Jorge Masvidal vs Kamaru Usman could not take shape because of some money matters and contractual issues? Fortunately for both fighters, the fight took place at UFC 251.
Something similar is the case with Daniel Cormier, who denies fights unless the promotion gave him the amount he deserves. We quote his coach, who told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.
“Although Dana is going to throw so much money at DC. DC can’t pass it up. DC loves money. So that’s gonna happen. And I think about this Jorge Masvidal. They wouldn’t give him nothing that he wanted, till the right money fight. You got to see the UFC is a great business, they know what they’re doing, and the numbers got to make sense for them. If they’re going to make good money, they’ll give you money.”
He also believes that a DC or Stipe Miocic fight would be a great moneymaker against Jon Jones. Bones last fought in January against Dominick Reyes and broke his undefeated 12-fight win streak. Coach Javier says, “The winner of this fight is going to get Jones. I believe that because Jones showed interest. If Jones didn’t show any interest in that, that’s different.”
The coach then shares what keeps DC so hungry. Daniel Cormier lost to Miocic in UFC 241, and that is not how he wanted to end his career. The coach said, “He wants to make that L into a W, that’s his main focus. I don’t think he’s thinking past that. He has talked about retirement, but deep down inside, he’s going to wait and see. I want to him to retire.”
Retirement, for DC, seems far!
Earlier, UFC President Dana White had also signaled that DC should not retire. If Cormier wins his bout against The Silencer, he will have that ‘W’ back, but it will still be a pinching fact that he could never beat Jon Jones. So this seems to be a logical move to go for that trilogy fight against Jon Jones, given their last meeting ended in a draw.

The last time they handed Jon Jones a defeat resulted from a controversial decision. He was disqualified against Matt Hamill and hence his MMA record of 26-1-0 (1 NC) still appears clean. This gives DC another reason to have one last shot at tainting Jon’s legacy.
All this makes us believe that DC has got some good reasons to stay and prove himself as the greatest both in the heavyweight as well as the light heavyweight categories.
