The head coach of Daniel Cormier, Javier Mendez, has spoken out on what went wrong during DC’s rematch with Stipe Miocic.
Despite controlling the early rounds Cormier ultimately succumbed to the devastating body shots thrown by Miocic. Cormier used excellent dirty boxing during the initial rounds. Moreover, he was successful in a few of his takedown attempts and landed several shots through the pockets early on.

Javier Mendez reveals why Daniel Cormier lost
However, once Miocic landed a body shot, it was downhill from there.
Javier Mendez revealed that there were few reasons why Daniel Cormier lost. The main reason was that DC shifted away from the game plan. Cormier took things in his own hand and was successful initially, however it backfired almost immediately.
To make matter worse for DC, he was recovering from back surgery and went into camp immediately after the initial recovery process. Maybe due to the body shots or lack of cardio due to his injury, Cormier slowed down during the latter part of the fight.
“He went off the game plan obviously, he said that and we all said that. Another thing too he had just come off a back surgery so going into a full training camp against a great champion like Stipe is no joke and it was hard on him.” Said Mendez during his interview with Brett Okamoto
Mendez confirmed that this time around there is no underlying issues. Daniel Cormier is injury-free and has been training regularly in his makeshift garage gym during this camp.

Mendez mentioned that Cormier is as motivated as ever and wants to retire at the top if he chooses to do so. However, Mendez has fueled fight rumors by suggesting the winner of Miocic and Cormier might fight Jon Jones next. With the fight fast approaching, fight fans are eager to see if Cormier can reclaim the title and potentially retire as champion.
