Since Khabib Nurmagomedov pulled out of UFC 249, Justin Gaethje was brought in as a replacement to fight Tony Ferguson. Now that’s a barn burner of a fight! But, how will it affect the landscape of the lightweight division including the future of Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, once the dust settles?
Originally booked as Khabib vs Tony, the main event of UFC 249 was one of the most anticipated fights in UFC history. However, due to his personal reasons, Khabib decided to stay at home and not compete in the event. Instantaneously, the company turned towards arguably the most violent fighter in the division.
Justin Gaethje (#4 in the division) stepped up to fight Tony on short notice. Usually, Gaethje does not entertain short notice fights. But, being a fierce competitor, Gaethje signed on the dotted line. He will now fight Tony for the interim lightweight title at an undisclosed location on April 18.

UFC 249, Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje: A potential disaster?
The UFC could have paused all action until the Coronavirus is under control. Trying to push through something of this nature with impromptu matchups can have a drastic effect on the future of the division. Let’s say that Tony loses his match against Gaethje, will we get to see Khabib vs Tony? Even if we do, will it have the same intensity as before? Probably not.
Furthermore, Gaethje will be next in line to compete for the undisputed strap. In a fight with Khabib, Gaethje has the necessary tools to beat the champion. His defensive wrestling, forward pressure, and brutal power could be problematic for the champion. So, what’s the problem?
Well, it makes the job of the champion easy. Both Gaethje and Ferguson, are the biggest threats (stylistically) to Khabib’s reign. Considering the fact that Khabib is closing in on his retirement, the loser of this fight might never get a chance to face off against the ‘Eagle’. Dana White might have deprived the fans of a mega-fight.

A Happy Irishman, Conor McGregor
Conor McGregor was in talks with the company to fight Gaethje in summer. However, recent developments suggest that it will not happen as Gaethje got his hands full with ‘El Cucuy.’

The winner of UFC 249 will fight Khabib in August or September. Meanwhile, Conor is left with no opponent to fight. And if the lockdown is extended, the UFC will refrain from using Conor, as he draws a lot of money from the media tours.
McGregor may choose to sit out and let the cards unfold. Or, he might rematch Dustin Poirier and try to make a statement. One thing is almost certain, the winner of the title unification bout will likely face Conor next.
