Conor McGregor is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, stars in the UFC. With an exceptional talent to capture the public’s imagination, ‘The Notorious’ has built an enormous fanbase for himself and has achieved massive ‘celebrity’ status.

However, according to the Irish star, he doesn’t like people associating this term with his name.

Ahead of his mega showdown with Dustin Poirier for UFC 264, Conor McGregor sat down with famous NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith and talked about his July 11, 2021, matchup.

Since ‘The Notorious‘ was the top UFC star, same as now, the veteran ESPN interviewer asked McGregor a variety of things. While discussing the UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, McGregor dismissed ‘The Nigerian Nightmare‘ and thereafter talked about his fame.

“There’s no celebrity; there’s no fantasy. That thing is nada, nothing. Not on the radar of anything.”

“Fame and celebrity, there’s pitfall’s for it. But I’m no celebrity. People mistake me for a celebrity. I break people’s faces for money and bounce. That’s what I do,” said the self-proclaimed ‘Face of the Fight Game’.

McGregor, at the time, was looking to avenge his loss to ‘El Diamanté‘, who beat him in their rematch at UFC 257. The three-fight saga between Dustin Poirier and the Irish star saw McGregor losing two fights in 2021. The former dual champion won the first exchange of the trilogy at UFC 178.

Conor McGregor is undoubtedly a celebrity

The Irish superstar could say he doesn’t like people considering himself a celebrity, but his 45+ Instagram followers, over 9 million Twitter followers, and other social platforms admirers are still behind their favorite star.

They celebrate a McGregor event like nothing else. The buzz around his events surpasses all the excitement for any other event, whether it’s for a press conference, a ceremonial weigh-in, or a performance inside the Octagon. ‘The Notorious’ has reached a level of stardom, never seen before. Ronda Rousey was perhaps his closest competitor in this regard.

All the mega stars show up for his fights. He even fought Floyd Mayweather in a professional setting without having a single bout prior. Besides, he was on numerous talk shows and has had offers from Hollywood. These all make him an absolute celebrity.
