Serena Williams and Venus Williams have contributed to the sport of tennis like no other. Despite achieving superstardom, they have had their fair share of controversies. One being Serena Williams’ C- Walk after her Olympic win in 2012. However, Ronda Rousey came out in support of the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

Many were not happy with Williams’ action, as the walk was associated with gangs, as reported by ‘Daily Mail‘. The hip-hop dance rose to fame in the 1970s courtesy of ‘The Crips’- a Los Angeles gang. Hence, the athlete was criticized.

Fox Sports reporter Jason Whitlock even deemed Williams’ spontaneous celebration as ‘immature and classless’.

But Rousey came to Williams’ defense and took to Twitter to share her thoughts. The Olympic bronze medalist judoka and Strikeforce champion wrote, I loooooved @serenawilliams ‘ post victory c-walk! Tennis people need to lighten up!”

‘Rowdy’ made her UFC debut just a year later and there was no looking back after that. After going undefeated for a while, she faced Holly Holm in 2015 and tasted her first professional MMA setback. A year later, Rousey came back to the Octagon and suffered a T/KO defeat to Amanda Nunes.

‘Rowdy’ thus retired with a 12-2-0 record and has no intentions of returning to the sport. However, she lengthened her combat career by joining the famous wrestling promotion, WWE.

Serena Williams explains her intention behind the C-Walk

As per the Tennis star, she hadn’t planned the dance. It was just something she did because she was happy. When reporters asked Williams about the dance, the American tennis star said (h/t Daily Mail), “Actually, there is a name. But I don’t know if I — it’s inappropriate. It’s just a dance we do in California.”
