When we talk about women in the fighting game, Ronda Rousey‘s name appears on the top shelf. She started as a Judoka who won several medals for the United States before becoming the first athlete ever to win an Olympic medal for the United States. She then turned towards MMA and had a good run. While she did struggle initially, she faired well after joining Strikeforce.

In her memoir, My Fight/ Your Fight, Ronda Rousey mentioned an incident where a fighter’s claims of an early stoppage stole the thunder from Rousey’s win. The incident saw Rousey getting booed by the spectators despite winning in a fair fight. Ronda Rousey couldn’t hold herself back and asked her opponent if she wanted to have another go at it.

Ronda Rousey’s Strikeforce debut was full of action and drama

Rousey got a big opportunity in MMA when she was called up by ‘Strikeforce’ in 2011. Her opponent was Sarah D’Alelio. While the fight lasted only 25 seconds in the very first round. The referee’s stoppage created a controversy. Ronda Rousey had caught her opponent in an armbar and the other hand was stuck, which made it impossible for her to tap out. Thus, the opponent verbally expressed her wish to tap.

‘Rowdy’ was the one who shared this with the referee, and the fight was stopped. D’Alelio, however, said she hadn’t tapped after the referee stopped the fight. In her book ‘Rowdy’ wrote, She’s trying to tap,” I told the referee. The referee called the fight. “I didn’t tap! I didn’t tap!” she shouted to the referee. The entire fight had lasted twenty-five seconds. I jumped up, pumping my hands in the air. She went back to her corner, protesting. The crowd booed. I looked in her direction. “You want to go again?” I yelled in front of the crowd. “Come on, let’s go again.”

While D’Alelio asked Ronda Rousey not to pay heed to the boos after the fight, Rousey had some other plans. Talking to her MMA coach Edmond, Rousey shared she will break an opponent’s arm in the future if such a situation arose.

Ronda Rousey’s coach didn’t take his fee

Her first victory in Strikeforce earned Ronda Rousey a cheque for $8000. While she was elated, she offered the standard 10% of the winnings to her coach Edmond. The coach, however, denied the payment. He said that he saw immense potential in Rousey and that she was someone who could make millions in a fight. He said he would accept the payments then. The coach’s words came true and Ronda Rousey became the queen of the sport and later in the WWE.
