Recently, ‘The American Gangster’ took to his show, ‘Beyond the Fight’ and compared the new fighter’s progress with some of the old and established ones.
Chael Sonnen was shocked at Alex Pereira’s UFC career
Sonnen shared his thoughts. “Pereira is getting ready to fight for a world championship. Yeah. Okay. Shocking news. … But Pereira did it very quickly”, said Sonnen. He talked about ‘Poatan’ and his quick climb in the UFC to get to a main event. However, the fact he’d be fighting for the world title shocked the ‘American Gangster’.
He compared Pereire’s growth to some other fighters. Nonetheless, him reaching the main event after just three UFC fights, is in fact stupefying. “If you’re talking about UFC fights, he’s only had three”, he exclaimed.

Sonnen talked about Pereira’s fight with Sean Strickland. However, he could not hide his disbelief. He said, “I thought I did not realize it’s only 3 times in the UFC and straight into a world championship. Now I don’t have anything I can compare that to.” Sonnen seemingly disapproved of Pereira’s fight against Israel Adesanya.
Chael Sonnen compared Alex Pereira to Jon Jones, Conor McGregor, and others
Firstly, he compared ‘Poatan’ with Jon Jones. He said, “Jon Jones’s run was very quick, just by example. Jon Jones debuted, and it was in 2008. But Jon Jones debuted, let’s call it January, by July, he had a 6-0 record.”
Sonnen talked about how quickly ‘Bones’ rose in the promotion.

Alex Pereira lacks star power like Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey
Furthermore, Sonnen claimed that only 3 fights in the UFC should not lead to the main event. “This is shocking”, he said. Moreover, he spoke of the fighter’s star power. Pereira didn’t have any fame backing him to push him this fast in the UFC.
“Didn’t have not huge star power coming in, right. Don’t compare him to Brock Lesnar. Not this big star power. Don’t compare him to Conor McGregor or to Ronda Rousey. What they did, where they came in with something really hot,” Sonnen added.
