The former UFC fighter, Chael Sonnen recently got into quite a bit of trouble after his X account was hacked. A few X-rated rants against Jon Jones, Dana White, and others grabbed the fight fans’ attention. But this also brought up an episode that Sonnen shared with the WWE legend, John Cena. 

Back in 2022, ‘The American Gangster’ made many comments on the Hollywood persona and publicly embarrassed him. He even called his physique fake and compared it to Liver King’s physique. Furthermore, the former mixed martial artist raised some eyebrows as he commented on Cena’s tweet with motivational words for his audience. But now, Sonnen revealed the motivation that led him to type the comments.

Chael Sonnen reveals the reason for talking bad about John Cena

In the recent episode of ‘Good Guy/Bad Guy’, Daniel Cormier dug up Sonnen’s past tweets. One of the tweets read, “This quote is so stupid I don’t know how to make fun of it. It seems to be ridiculing itself. Like a perfect organism of stupidity that requires no outside factors to survive.” It was indeed a reply to Cena’s motivational tweet. 

‘The Bad Guy’ was pretty jealous of Cena’s fan following. His belief that it was Cena’s fake account enraged the sleeping dragon and pushed Sonnen to send the aforementioned reply. Sonnen said, “That was from jealousy. I think like any mean tweet that anybody puts out, that’s where it comes from. I was trying to build my social media and I had done a good job. And I had a little stick and I don’t follow anybody and I only put out so much. This was my little stick and it was catching on. I go check out John Cena’s. He had 11 times the followers I did. But the problem with it, it very clearly was not him.”

Sonnen was visibly upset with his low fanbase as he compared it to that of Cena’s. Things turned even bitter when he saw people responding to the motivational quotes released by the account. He even thought that the WWE star didn’t even have the social media app on his phone. Admitting his jealousy, Sonnen continued, “Probably doesn’t even have Twitter downloaded on his phone. And that created a jealousy by me.”

Although Sonnen came forth and admitted that it was nothing but envy, he sure did quite a bit of damage. Let’s take the spotlight a couple of years back and find out what the former mixed martial artist said about Cena while comparing him to the Liver King.

What did ‘The American Gangster’ say about Cena’s physique?

In late 2022, Sonnen appeared in an episode of Ariel Helwani’s talk show, ‘The MMA Hour’. Therein, the MMA analyst was asked about his issues with John Cena. While he began answering by talking about Cena’s social media handles, he entered the topic of Cena’s physique. Surprisingly, he seemed to believe that it was fake. Sonnen said, “Okay, I really do feel like if you are gonna come out. you’re gonna put your side on the side of nutrition and what’s the difference between John Cena and Liver King? Nothing. They are both using a fake physique.”

The MMA expert continued to rant about it and suggested that Cena should come out and tell his fans the truth. He claimed that the WWE star was lying to the youth when asked them to work hard in order to look like him. Sonnen was fixated on Cena’s alleged steroidal use. Nevertheless, after a couple of years, the fighter has revealed the real motivation behind his words on Twitter.
