Ben Askren has been out of MMA for a while now. However, it does not mean that the ex-UFC fighter will not voice out his views. Since forever, Askren has shown that he is still a combat sports enthusiast. Considering his wrestling as well as his MMA background, Askren is constantly monitoring different leagues and matches. Even during his UFC tenure, the former wrestler was known for his moral code in all his fights. Even though the 38-year-old has now retired, he has not forgotten what it morally means to be a fighter. ‘Funky’ always stands up against poor judgments. He recently did so over a tweet. Everybody must be agreeing with his view as it cannot be considered wrong in any case.

In a recent SDSU Wrestling video going viral, one athlete was found assaulting his opponent. The South Dakota State University Athletics (SDSU) is known to give a recognizable platform to university-level athletes. The games are fair to play. However, in the video, the athlete shown was not going fair in any sort of way. In this regard, the former UFC fighter lashed out at the wrestler.

Ben Askren is not having it with this amateur athlete

Given his wrestling background, ‘Funky’ has an amazing grip on the sport. The viral video that he was found criticizing is a moment caught in a wrestling match that took place under the SDSU. In the video, one wrestler was seen hitting his opponent.

The original post on Twitter read, “This is wrestling, not UFC. There is no need for this in this sport. The end is what ended the match with Tanner defaulting due to injury from an illegal move. Ref was going to let this go all day if Hahn didn’t step out there to his injured athlete.

Ben Askren replied to the tweet in support of this viewpoint.

Such a dirtbag move, kick him out for the season,” commented Askren about the bout that took place on 27th January 2023. It is pretty evident that the former wrestler is not appreciating the mix of MMA and wrestling in a pure wrestling match.

The referee himself did a questionable job by not stopping the fight as soon as slaps and punches started to roll in. Wrestling can be hugely differentiated from other forms of martial arts. Especially if you’re as good of a wrestler as the UFC legend ‘Funky’ himself.

Through his achievements, it is evident that the American ex-fighter never cut slack in wrestling. The fighter was the first-ever NCAA champion in Missouri wrestling history. On top of that, the fighter won 87 wrestling matches in a row in his collegiate wrestling years. The wrestler also had the great opportunity to make his country proud by competing in the Olympics. Even though he did not win a medal, his performance in the 2008 Olympics was truly noteworthy.
