One of the biggest stars in the world of pro wrestling, Brock Lesnar faced Frank Mir on his UFC debut. It was crazy to think that Lesnar’s second MMA pro fight would be against one of the very best in the sport, Frank Mir. Throughout the build-up of UFC 81, Frank Mir made fun of Brock Lesnar being a pro wrestler. He completely disregarded Lesnar’s wrestling achievements despite Lesnar being an NCAA Division 1 heavyweight wrestling champion.
The night of the fight, Lesnar took Mir down and started to land some good shots but he got caught in a nasty submission. Being a technical genius, Frank Mir was able to trap Lesnar’s leg and submit him by a kneebar. It was embarrassing for Lesnar. Not only did he lose by a submission, but he also lost in the very first round.
Brock Lesnar returned to the octagon in August of the same year. He defeated Heath Herring via a unanimous decision. Lesnar went on to fight the “Natural” Randy Couture for the heavyweight title. Some say that this title shot was given way too early. However, one cannot argue about the star power of Brock Lesnar. He successfully captured the UFC Heavyweight Championship by defeating Randy Couture in round 2.
