UFC welterweight Kevin Lee had a rather unfortunate showing when he returned to the welterweight division at UFC Vegas 35. ‘The Motown Phenom’ lost a unanimous decision on the scorecards to Daniel Rodriguez who stepped in on short notice. ‘D-Rod’ managed to negate Lee’s wrestling attempts and had him hurt badly at a few different points in the fight.
Kevin Lee started off strong but his momentum began to fade away leaving room for Rodriguez to impose his skill set. At the final bell, it was largely clear that Rodriguez had done enough to win and now he’s looking like a major player at welterweight. The same can’t be said for Lee who took to Instagram Live and briefly opined on his fight, “Well, that was a sh*t fight.”

Kevin Lee was once a promising figure in the sport and he competed for an interim title early on into his UFC tenure. However, as the years have passed, Lee hasn’t been able to secure his footing on the climb to the top. What’s more, his spot on the roster is potentially in jeopardy as he’s suffered some major setbacks.
At one point, it would have been unimaginable that Kevin Lee’s place in the UFC would be on the rocks. However, UFC President Dana White said that he would discuss Lee’s future soon to decide if he should be ‘Here or not here’.
“That’s a good question, again that’s a thing that we will get together on Tuesday and talk about and figure out what’s next for him. Here or not here.”

Daniel Rodriguez was considered to be a fighter that Lee should have walked through on short notice, however, it wasn’t the case. ‘D-Rod’ is 6-1 in the UFC and is looking like a sneaky contender in the welterweight division. He has proven his mettle and will be looking forward to being ranked within the top 15 soon.

Time will be the best indicator to judge if Rodriguez has what it takes to truly make it to the very top. However, on this night, he showed a more comprehensive skill set and definitively beat a former interim title challenger. As it stands, his trajectory in the UFC appears to be on the incline in a major way.
