In 2009, Phelps was photographed while enjoying some hemp. This led to many controversies, and Kelloggs ultimately terminated its contract with him. Rogan was not a fan of this and uploaded an open letter on his blog.

Rogan started the letter by saying, “I think any reasonably intelligent person would admit that it’s one of the most f***ed up and corrupt laws that we have today in this country.” He added that according to him, hemp is “relatively harmless” and far less dangerous than prescription drugs and alcohol. He also explained why it was illegal at the time.

Rogan explained that the major reason for its illegality was because it was a plant, and one can’t patent or control its sale. He also pointed out that making it legal would “greatly affect the demand for a host of prescription drugs that rake in billions of dollars each year for pharmaceutical companies.”

Rogan also mentioned how hemp hadn’t killed a single person in over 10,000 years. He called it a “horribly illogical law that is in place because of corruption and propaganda.” According to him, telling someone they can’t do something they enjoy even though it hurts no one (including themselves) is “madness”, “ignorant”, and “completely f*cking un-American.”

He also called hemp laws “a horrible waste of resources and law enforcement.” Rogan thought it was stupid to spend taxpayers’ money on any “victimless bulls*it.” He also pointed out that many “potheads” like himself buy their products and that this situation would adversely impact the company.
