The historic run of Ireland at the FIFA Women’s World Cup just ended. The team showed resilience, fought against all odds, and booked a ticket to Australia and New Zealand when few would have given them a chance. Their first-ever appearance at the esteemed tournament was punctuated by their fierce, never say die attitude on the pitch. However, after suffering a heartbreaking loss, the team is engulfed in mixed emotions. Lifting the ambition of thousands on their shoulders is no simple task, and no one understands it better than Conor McGregor.

Despite exhibiting courage and the will to fight, Ireland’s women’s soccer team found itself at the mercy of luck. The team lost the first match against Australia when Steph Catley hit the net from the spot in the second half. Therefore, the second group match against Canada became a do-or-die match. ‘The Notorious’ kept a close watch on the crucial match and went through a plethora of emotions throughout the match.

The 34-year-old turned to Twitter and experienced every tense or exhilarating moment of the match. He has heeled the team in their campaign since the qualifying rounds. While luck forced some plays, a sheer moment of brilliance came in the fourth minute of the match.

Katie McCabe made the whole nation dream when she netted a goal directly from the corner. “What a player!” McGregor wrote in a Tweet.

Notably, this also marked Ireland’s first-ever goal in tournament history. McCabe, an Arsenal player but Ireland’s captain on the field, thus etched her name in the history books. She exhibited what it meant to wear the captain’s armband. Therefore, the Dubliner announced, “Iconic moment in Irish football just now! The ladies running the show! Scored from the corner WOW!  Captain McCabe! 🇮🇪”

The goal this early in the match not only put them in front but also dealt a deadly blow to Canada’s aspirations. ‘Mystic Mac’ penned, “Yes!!!!! Ireland 🇮🇪” as he saw the jubilant faces.

However, the Irish team failed to hold on to the lead as they conceded in the extra time of the first half. The inexperience of a big stag also caught up to them as Canada seized control by netting early in the second half. The scoreline read 1-2, and there was no further alteration made. A second loss meant they bowed out of the tournament they toiled hard to get into.

While the team slumped into a gloomy mood, the Irish fighter took pride in the fight that the “ladies” showed.

A new dawn is on the horizon for the Ireland soccer team

In a long, heartfelt tweet after the disheartening loss, he appreciated the team’s historic run. He wrote, “Ireland, ladies, you were magnificent today! Head Up and Keep Building! Because I tell you one thing, this is happening in our lifetime! McCabe, you are a machine! Some great lessons learned here. Take them and go forward! Its only starting. It’s not even 10mins into this game 🇮🇪”
